About the Region - the BC Rockies.
Invermere is located in the heart of the Columbia
Valley. Also known as the Rocky Mountain Trench, the valley separates
the Canadian Rockies to the east from the Purcell Mountain range to the
west. The valley is the where the mighty Columbia River begins its journey
to the ocean and contains the largest intact wetlands in North America.
Native Canadians lived off the resources of the area and to this day
are important to the economic activity of the valley. David Thompson
was the first white person to make use of the area, establishing a trading
post near Wilmer. The area eventually grew as mining operations took
over and over time the region has turned to tourism as a key industry.
Invermere is three hours from Calgary and its growing population, many
of whom have cottages nearby. Lake Windermere is a large reason for the
popularity of the area in the summer but there is so much more to be
discovered. Among glider pilots the area is known as a destination for
great conditions. What isn't as well known is the opportunity for all
types of recreational activities. Join us and discover the beauty of
the Columbia Valley.
Getting Here
From Calgary it is approximately a 3 hour drive, mostly through Banff
and Kootenay National Parks. Plan a little more time to stop periodically
for pictures and to take in the scenery. Take the #1 TransCanada Highway
west. At Castle Junction exit and follow Highway 93 (the Banff Windermere
Highway) south to Radium Hot Springs. There are accomodation options
in Radium or at the 4 way stop sign turn left (south) onto Highway 93/95.
You should reach the lights in Invermere after approximately 15 minutes.
From Cranbrook and the new Canadian Rockies International Airport, follow
the signs for Highway 93/95 north to Windermere, Invermere, and Radium.
Give yourself 1.5 to 2 hours for the drive.
